View of Almudena cathedral from Oeste park.
The Almudena cathedral in Madrid is that it was completed as recently as 1993. When Spain's capital moved from Toledo to Madrid in the 16th century, Spain was also expanding its empire across the world. So even though having a large cathedral was important to the capital city, the preference was to spend money on building the empire rather than a church in the capital. The work on the cathedral started in the late 19th century with a neo-Gothic style architecture and was completed in 1993.
